WELLS – No charges had been filed Sunday night against the driver of a Dodge pickup whose U-turn led to a crash that killed a local man who was holding a yard sale.

Wells Police Department Sgt. Kent Berdeen said in a news release issued Sunday that the investigation "is still under way and all the details are not available at this time."

Berdeen said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash, which took place about 8:45 a.m. Saturday.

Police said 72-year-old David Hoyt was attempting to make a U-turn on Route 9 when he collided with an oncoming Toyota Tundra that was hauling a travel trailer. The trailer is about 10 feet tall and weighs about 10,000 pounds.

The travel trailer jackknifed, flipped over and tumbled off Route 9 and onto the property where Jeff Dickerson, 47, of Wells was holding a yard sale. Dickerson, who was pinned by the trailer, died. Claudette Desjardins, 67, of Wells, was also pinned. She was in fair condition Sunday night at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Hoyt was listed in fair condition at the Portland hospital.

The driver of the Tundra, 38-year-old Todd Bresette, and his wife, Lisa, 40, of Sanford, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Berdeen said the accident is being reconstructed by members of the Sanford Police Department and the Maine State Police.
