WALDOBORO — A 32-year-old man is dead and a 25-year-old woman was hospitalized after a shooting on Friendship Road that was reported to police Monday morning.
Family members of Norman P. Benner found him dead about 9:30 a.m. when they went to the house to check on him, according to a news release from Maine Department of Public Safety.
Arlene Lawless, who lived with him at the house at 2177 Friendship Road, was being treated for gunshot wounds Monday at Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she was transferred from Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, the release said.
Lawless was listed in critical condition about 5:20 p.m., according to Maine Medical Center.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said her condition was later upgraded to serious and she was expected to survive.
He said police have a "very good idea of what happened," but are still "looking into the circumstances before we talk about them publicly." McCausland wouldn't say when police believe the shooting happened.
He said an autposy on Benner is planned for today.
Maine State Police detectives, Waldoboro police and Lincoln County deputies are investigating the shooting, according to the release. No arrests had been made by late Monday.
The house is owned by Jeremy McPhee, who also lived there, the release said.
