PORTLAND — One person has been injured in a butane stove explosion aboard a charter fishing vessel in Maine.

Coast Guard crews were notified just before 10 a.m. Saturday that a passenger aboard the charter vessel Dawg Daze had been burned in the explosion and that the boat was headed back to port.

The explosion occurred when the boat was 28 miles off the coast. The flash explosion caused a fire in the forward compartment but did not damage the structural integrity of the vessel, said Ken Stuart, command duty officer for the Coast Guard in South Portland.

There were seven passengers on the boat. They extinguished the fire and headed back to Portland.

One passenger, a 35-year-old man, sustained burns on his arms and legs, Stuart said.

A rescue boat carrying Coast Guard personnel and three Portland EMTs met the charter vessel about seven miles off the coast of Portland and brought the 35-year-old man to shore. He was taken to Maine Medical Center.

The fishing boat is based in Harpswell. The victim’s name has not been released.
