The site of President Obama’s fundraising reception this month in Maine has been moved to a larger venue because of a high demand for tickets.

The March 30 event was supposed to be at the Portland Marriott at Sable Oaks in South Portland, but is now planned for the Hutchinson Union Building at Southern Maine Community College, also in South Portland.

Doors open at 3 p.m.

About 800 people had been expected to attend the event at the Marriott. A campaign official said the tickets sold out.

The Hutchinson building at SMCC, also known as the HUB athletic center, has a capacity for 1,700 people. Former President Bill Clinton spoke at a rally there in 2010 for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Libby Mitchell.

At the president’s campaign event, prices for tickets range from $100 for general admission to $10,000 for entry to a photo reception with the president.

Tickets for students start at $44.

Following the event at SMCC, there will be a more exclusive dinner at the Portland Museum of Art, which about 100 donors are expected to attend.

Admission to that event starts at $5,000 and tops out at a $30,000 donation to the Democratic National Committee.

Mainers had contributed more than $560,000 to Obama’s re-election campaign as of late last month.
In 2008, Obama won Maine with 58 percent of the vote to Republican John McCain’s 40 percent.

The president was last in the state in 2010, when he and his family vacationed on Mount Desert Island.
