BIDDEFORD — The former pastor who is charged with possession of child pornography was a music teacher at Biddeford Middle School from 1989 to 1995.

James Napier, 60, of Alfred has spent the past seven years as director of the New Beginnings Christian Mission in Biddeford, offering spiritual outreach to the city's poor and homeless.

Acting on a tip, members of the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit checked Napier's computer on Friday and found more than 100 images of children engaged in sex, many of them children who appeared to be younger than 12.

He was arrested Saturday and is free on $500 bail pending an Oct. 23 court date.

Napier was certified as a teacher from 1977 to 1982 and from 1988 to 1998, according to the state Department of Education. Superintendent Jeremy Ray said Napier taught at the city's middle school from 1989 to 1995.
