PORTLAND — Rookie forward Brian O’Neill knocked in a richochet from the back glass 3:59 into overtime to lift the Manchester Monarchs to a 4-3 win against the Portland Pirates in an AHL exhibition game at the Portland Ice Arena Sunday before a crowd of about 400.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead during the first period when defenseman Mark Louis scored on a shot from the top of the slot.
After Manchester defenseman David Kolomatis made it 1-1 by putting in a rebound less than 10 minutes into the second period, veteran center Alexandre Bolduc sent the Pirates into a 2-1 lead by scoring a goal on their sixth power play of the game.
Rookie Nikolay Prokhorkin tied the score with a power-play goal six minutes into the third period, and the Monarchs, the defending Atlantic Division champions, took the lead when defenseman Nick Deslauriers intercepted a pass and scored on a breakaway with 53 seconds left.
Portland rookie Chris Brown sent the game into overtime when he scored with 23 seconds left in regulation.
