Pirates defeat Providence with power-play goal

Portland’s rookie goalie made 43 saves in his first start for Pirates.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Gilbert Brule’s power-play goal at 1:43 in overtime gave the Portland Pirates a 4-3 victory Sunday over the Providence Bruins.

Providence led 3-1 midway through the second period before Portland rattled off consecutive goals by Tobias Rieder, Brandon McMilan and, finally, Brule.

Portland rookie goalie Louis Domingue made 43 saves in his first start of the season.
