LEBANON – Two pit bulls badly mauled a young girl on River Road Saturday afternoon, state police said.

The girl was admitted to Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.H.,, police said, but there was no information available on her condition Saturday night.

According to police, the attack by the dogs was reported shortly after 1 p.m. Police said the dogs were pulled off the girl by a family member and a passer-by, allowing the girl to run inside her house to get away from the dogs. They said she suffered multiple bites all over her body.

Police did not release the girl's name or age Saturday.

They said two other girls and the passer-by who helped pull the dogs away from the first girl suffered minor injuries from the dogs. Those three were treated by paramedics at the scene and did not need to be hospitalized.

The dogs were taken from the owner's home by the Maine Warden Service and will be quarantined for at least 10 days to see if they have rabies or other diseases. According to state police, the owner told them that the dogs were not up to date on their vaccinations.

The case will be referred to the York County District Attorney for possible charges against the dogs' owner, state police said.
