TOPSHAM — An elderly Brunswick woman died in a car crash Wednesday afternoon at the Topsham Fair Mall.

Sgt. Mark Gilliam of the Topsham Police Department identified the victim as 79-year-old Sally Lemieux of Katherine Street.

Lemieux’s 2001 Toyota Camry was struck on the driver’s side by a 1997 Jeep Wrangler driven by Renee Ettinger, 27, of Topsham. The vehicles collided at the intersection of Topsham Fair Mall Road and Midway Drive, near the Ruby Tuesday restaurant.

Topsham Fair Mall Road, which is the main road at the shopping mall, had to be closed to traffic for about an hour, Gilliam said. The crash took place around 2:30 p.m.

“At this point it looks like a failure (on Lemieux’s part) to yield to oncoming traffic,” Gilliam said.

The crash remains under investigation by a team of accident reconstructionists from the Brunswick Police Department.

A Lifeflight helicopter responded to the crash site but was not needed because Lemieux died at the crash scene.
