Portland Police Chief James Craig has stayed within the department in selecting a new assistant chief, choosing Commander Michael Sauschuck for the department's No. 2 position.

Craig said Sauschuck, who currently heads the department's uniform operations group, distinguished himself from the pool of 40 applicants for the job, applicants from all over the country including police chiefs from smaller communities.

"Mike has been my right hand since the retirement of (former assistant chief) Joseph Loughlin," Craig said. Sauschuck is well-respected by officers, elected offciials and the community,, he said.

Craig said he plans to select a new uniform operations group commander soon.
