PORTLAND — Portland police have surrounded a home on Magnolia Street in a standoff with the occupants of the residence.

Lt. Robert Ridge said police went to the home around 7 p.m. after receiving a report of a man on Allen Avenue, who Ridge said “was covered in blood.”

The man, who had been stabbed, was taken to Maine Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, Ridge said.

The victim led police to the home on Magnolia Street where police say the stabbing suspect has taken refuge. About 20 police officers have barricaded the street and surrounded the home. They also shut down nearby Woodlawn Avenue, a major street in this neighborhood.

Ridge said the Police Department’s Special Reactions Team has been called in to deal with the situation. But as of 1 a.m. Thursday, no progress had been made during several hours of negotiations, he said.

Police were in the process early Thursday morning of drafting search warrants to try to get into the home, Ridge said.

Police believe there are three people in the home, but they declined to release their identities or their connections to the stabbing.
