Portland public schools to hold classes Monday

Officials say enough progress has been made clearing snow from city streets and sidewalks to allow schools to open safely.

PORTLAND — Portland public schools will hold classes Monday after school officials decided that city crews had made significant progress in clearing sidewalks and streets.

There was some question as to whether the city could remove enough snow in time for Monday classes, but after holding a conference call Sunday night the decision was made to move forward, said Peter Eglinton, the school district’s Chief Operating Officer.

"We are grateful to the city for recovering from this storm as quickly as they have," he said.

About two-thirds of the city’s 7,700 students walk or drive to school, placing the burden on school officials to decide whether conditions were safe enough to hold classes.

“It has been a city that has prided itself on neighborhood schools. As a result, many kids live near their schools,” Eglinton said.
