PORTLAND — Scarborough High School successfully defended its Maine Academic Decathlon title this weekend, overpowering teams from 13 other high schools from across the state.
The event was held Saturday at Deering High School.
David Heckman, who serves as the Decathlon’s state director, said Scarborough’s victory means the school will represent Maine in the national finals April 27-30 in Charlotte, N.C.
Heckman said Susan Rundell, a Scarborough High School junior, set an individual record for most points scored. He said Rundell is the first student to ever score more than 8,000 points – a feat that earned her the top medal honor.
Monmouth Academy placed second in the competition. Monmouth is the only other school in Maine to have won the title, outside of Scarborough, since the competion was established 26 years ago.
The Scarborough High School team is coached by M. Shane Davis, a high school teacher.
The Academic Decathlon was created to provide opportunities for students to experience the challenges of rigorous team and individual academic competition. Each student must compete in 10 categories, ranging from economics and art to music and science.
Each nine member team consists of three A students, three B students and three C students.
