HAMPDEN — The U.S. Postal Service’s mail processing center in Hampden is going to stay open, saving more than 150 jobs.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins announced today that the postmaster general has agreed to follow her legislation passed by the Senate last month and keep the Eastern Maine Processing Center open to ensure certain overnight delivery standards.

The Hampden facility was one of more than 200 processing centers across the country slated for closure as the Postal Service struggles with billions of dollars in losses.

Collins argued that Maine needed two processing centers to assure the timely delivery of mail in northern, eastern and central Maine, including medications essential to the well-being of senior citizens.

The state’s other mail processing facility is in Scarborough.

The Republican called it a “common sense approach.”
