The Kittery Police Department said a break in a sewer line may cause headaches for homeowners and motorists as it could take into Monday before repairs are completed.
A police dispatcher said crews from the Kittery Water District are expected to work through the night Sunday and into Monday morning as they pump sewage out of the broken line in the neighborhood near Walker Street and Otis Avenue.
Repairs to the sewer line won’t begin until Monday morning, which means that traffic headed to and from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard could be affected. Walker Street was reduced to one lane of traffic after the rupture was reported around 3 p.m. Sunday.
Authorities say they still don’t know what caused the sewer line to break. One homeowner called the police department to report that sewage was backing up into his bathtub.
