South Portland moves farmers market

SOUTH PORTLAND — The South Portland City Council voted 5-2 Monday in favor of moving the farmers market to a more visible location in the city.

The South Portland Farmers’ Market will move to Hinckley Drive adjacent to Mill Creek Park from its previous location at Thomas Knight Park on Waterman Drive.

The Planning Board is expected to consider granting a special exemption for outdoor sales and display at its meeting tonight.

Mayor Patti Smith and Councilor Rosemarie De Angelis voted against the move.

A section of Hinckley Drive will be closed from 2 to 8 p.m. every Thursday to make room for the market.

Caitlin Jordan, market manager, said it is likely the market will open this week with about 14 of the 17 vendors who have applied for permits from the city.

“I’m happy that it passed,” Jordan said. “That’s what the farmers market has wanted for a while now.”

Also on Monday the City Council voted to send a $39.9 million school operating budget to voters for approval. The budget, which represents a nearly 1.8 percent impact on taxes, was trimmed of about $136,000 by the School Board to bring the total in line with City Council expectations.

South Portland residents will have the final say on education spending in a May 15 school budget validation referendum.
