Storm breaking August drought

The Northeast storm soaking Maine today had deposited more than 3 inches of rain in Wells before 2 p.m., the National Weather Service is reporting, but is beginning to wind down in York County.

Coastal areas were being hit the hardest, according to Tom Hawley, a meteorologist in Gray, with the storm moving into the midcoast and Down East later today. As of 2 p.m., Portland had roughly an inch of rain, Sanford had nearly 2 inches and Fryeburg had almost three-quarters of an inch.

Winds were strong, with a gust recorded at nearly 35 mph, at the weather buoy off Portland Harbor.

No local flooding had been reported, Hawley said.

The rain has brought relief to what was shaping up to be one of the driest Augusts on record. The Portland area had seen only one-third of an inch of rain during the month. The last big rain was recorded on July 21, when nearly an inch fell, Hawley said.
