Update
The bridge connecting Berwick with Somersworth, N.H. has been closed because of high water levels on the Salmon Falls River.
The Rouote 9 bridge was shut down early this afternoon and will reopen once the water levels recede, according to the town of Berwick.
The important connection is just one of many roads that are closed or impassable as a result of heavy rain that started over the weekend and dropped as much 8 inches in York County. Areas north and east of the county were not hit as bad.
The impact of the heavy rain was made worse by the intense storm that hit two weeks ago, washing out many road shoulders and other structural support for roads.

PORTLAND — The cleanup is under way in Maine after heavy rains and high winds caused dozens of roads to flood and tree limbs to fall on power lines.
The National Weather Service says South Berwick had received more than 8 inches of rain as of early today. More than 7 inches had fallen in Eliot and Wells, while Kennebunk got more than 6 inches.
Meteorologist Tom Hawley said the strongest wind gust, 55 mph, was recorded in Portland.
The weather service said the combination of storm surge and strong wave action was expected to result in beach erosion in the midday hours.
Utility officials blamed high winds for broken tree limbs that fell on power lines and caused outages in the eastern Maine towns of Deer Isle and Stonington.
