Three juvenile residents in the high-risk unit at a youth detention center in South Portland attacked an adult worker and briefly escaped to a fenced-in area just after midnight Friday morning.

The three boys, all under 18, were taken back into custody at the Long Creek Youth Development Center with the help of South Portland police and the Maine Department of Corrections Special Operations Group before they could reach the perimeter fence, Superintendent Jeff Merrill II said..

“The juveniles caused extensive property damage and managed to get out of the building and into the outside recreation area,” Merrill said in a written statement.

The juveniles are each facing charges of escape, assault on an officer and aggravated criminal mischief.
