Polar plunge to raise money for sick children

The Associated Press

PORTLAND — A bunch of hardy fundraisers are taking an ocean plunge in the frigid ocean waters of Casco Bay to benefit a national retreat in Maine for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Camp Sunshine is holding its fifth annual Portland Polar Dip at noon on Saturday at East End Beach.

The goal is to raise $25,000, enough to put up more than a dozen families at Camp Sunshine.

The camp held a cold-water plunge in Phillips Lake in Dedham last weekend.

In all, the camp is hosting 11 of the cold-water fundraisers from Maine to Virginia this winter with a goal of raising $400,000.
