SEARSMONT — A Maine State Police trooper shot a man inside his home Friday after trying to arrest him on five warrants for failing to appear in court, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety said.
The confrontation occurred at 245 New England Road when Trooper James MacDonald arrived about 3 p.m. to arrest Leonard Maker, 42, who was armed, spokesman Stephen McCausland said.
McCausland said the trooper was also trying to serve a protection-from-abuse order on Maker.
The gunshot wound Maker suffered did not appear to be life-threatening, McCausland said. He was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was listed in fair condition Friday night.
MacDonald, who has been a trooper for about two years, was not injured and was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure for all shootings involving a state trooper.
Officer-involved shootings are investigated by the Maine Attorney General’s Office, which sent investigators to the scene Friday afternoon. Additional state police officers are investigating the incident, McCausland said.
Searsmont is a town about 11 miles west of Belfast.
