APPLETON, Wis. — Matt Verrier’s three-run homer sparked the University of Southern Maine to an 8-1 win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point Monday. The victory pushed USM into the final day of the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament.

The Huskies are two wins away from a third national baseball championship. USM will play either Ithaca (N.Y.) College or Linfield (Ore.) College in the first of Tuesday’s two final games.

Freshman Tyler Leavitt (North Andover, Mass.) gave USM the pitching performance of his career with the complete game win, saving his bullpen. He allowed four hits; Stevens Point left only four runners on base.

USM wiped out a 1-0 Stevens Point lead in its next at bat with a five-run fourth. Verrier’s home run, his first of the postseason, carried far over the left-field fence. The 5-1 lead gave Leavitt the cushion and confidence he needed to finish.
