AUGUSTA — A faculty member at the University of Southern Maine is one of three professors who were honored Wednesday by the Maine Campus Compact for their efforts to promote public service through higher education.
Lorrayne Carroll of Portland, a professor of English and gender studies at USM, received the Donald Harward Award for Faculty Service-Learning Excellence in a ceremony at the Maine State Museum.
Elizabeth Eames, an associate professor of anthropology at Bates College in Lewiston, and Craig McEwen, a professor of economy and sociology at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, also received the award.
The annual award recognizes faculty who integrate community or public service into the curriculum and who work to institutionalize service-learning.
Carroll and her students have tutored adults who are learning to speak English; worked with underprivileged children in a Head Start program; led a senior citizen reading group; participated in an English conversation class; and assisted in citizenship classes and after-school programs.
The Maine Campus Compact is a coalition of 18 institutions that promotes the public purposes and civic mission of higher education. The award is named for compact founder Donald Harward.
