AUGUSTA — A Vassalboro man has been indicted on a murder charge in the Nov. 21, 2013, stabbing death of Thomas A. Namer, 69, of Waterville.

The Kennebec County grand jury handed up the indictment Friday against Courtney D. Shea, 30, who has been in custody since the day after Namer was killed.

Shea called police early on Nov. 22 to say a body was in his driveway. He later told investigators that he had blacked out and killed Namer after Namer touched him sexually.

Shea said he had called Namer for a ride that night. Namer, who previously lived in the Augusta area, had a reputation for giving people rides home from bars late at night.

Shea said when he got in the car, Namer sexually propositioned him. Shea also told police he had been sexually abused at age 5 by one of his mother’s boyfriends and at age 11 by Namer himself, according to a Maine State Police affidavit.

Shea told police he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of all the abuse and was taking prescription medication for it. He and others said he had been drinking heavily the night of Nov. 21.

At one point early on Nov. 22, Shea told family members he had killed Namer and asked them to help bury him, according to the affidavit. They refused, and Shea ended up calling police.

Shea is due in court at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
