AUGUSTA — Charles M. Houghton told a judge he has no memory of events on the night of April 4, 2013.

“I blacked out,” Houghton, 31, of Waterville told Justice Donald Marden on Monday in Kennebec County Superior Court. “I broke my foot that night, and I woke up in jail.”

Houghton had just pleaded guilty to six counts of burglary of a motor vehicle, two counts of theft by unauthorized taking, and one count of stealing drugs, all related to that night.

He was sentenced to four years in jail, with all but six months suspended and two years’ probation.

Houghton said the offenses occurred after he and a person he knew from prison drank a half gallon of vodka. He said he does not normally drink.

“I obviously regret it, sir,” Houghton said.

He was arrested as police were investigating complaints of multiple vehicle burglaries in Waterville. Houghton had one shoe on at the time, said the prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Tracy DeVol. That was part of the description witnesses had provided.

She said a number of the items stolen were found on Houghton, including an Adderall pill — a stimulant most commonly used to treat attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder — taken from a woman’s vehicle.

Houghton’s attorney, Andrew Dawson, said the intent of the sentence was to get Houghton into Criminogenic Addiction & Recovery Academy at the Kennebec County jail.

Houghton was ordered to begin the sentence June 1.
