AUGUSTA — A Waterville man pleaded guilty Tuesday to aggravated criminal trespass and two counts of assault in exchange for the state dismissing three other charges, including robbery.

Junious J. Liggins, 32, was sentenced to five years in prison, with all but 18 months suspended, and two years of probation.

Conditions of probation ban him from contact with the victims and the co-defendants in the case, and he is prohibited from possessing dangerous weapons. He also was fined $600.

Assistant District Attorney Joelle Pratt told the judge that Liggins and two other people broke into an apartment on Water Street in Waterville, pushed an occupant down and held him at knifepoint.

An affidavit by a Waterville police officer said a wallet containing $50 and a cellphone were taken. Another man, Clifford Dumont, and a 14-year-old girl were charged in connection with the same incident.

Pratt said the confrontation occurred after a series of text messages between two groups of individuals about “what they were going to do to one another.”

Pratt also told Justice Thomas Humphrey that Liggins has a previous conviction for grand larceny in Virginia — for which he received a fully suspended sentence — as well as convictions for petty larceny in New York and criminal possession of marijuana in Florida for which he received “time-served” sentences.

Liggins’ attorney, Stephen Bourget, asked for the fine payment to be delayed until a few months after Liggins is released from prison. Justice Thomas Humphrey agreed.

Bourget said Liggins previously had worked as a successful bloodworm digger but would be unable to return to that work for a while.
