AUGUSTA — A 34-year-old man is in jail after allegedly leading police on high-speed chase when they attempted to stop him following reports of two purse snatchings in Augusta.
Police say Jed St. Hilaire, of West Gardiner, was charged with robbery, theft, eluding and other charges following his arrest Saturday night.
Police say they attempted to stop St. Hilaire’s car at 6 p.m. in Augusta following reports of purse snatchings in Wal-Mart and Hannaford parking lots earlier in the day.
Instead of stopping, St. Hilaire allegedly led police on a chase through the city and on to Interstate 95 at speeds of up to 110 mph, at one point driving south in the northbound lanes before stopping his car. St. Hilaire was arrested after he allegedly tried to flee on foot.
