Work begins on Sugarloaf expansion

The resort is adding 270 acres of glade skiing for the upcoming season.

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Work is under way to create hundreds of acres of new skiing terrain at the Sugarloaf ski resort in western Maine.

Two five-man crews on Monday began cutting trees on Burnt Mountain, adjacent to Sugarloaf Mountain, to add 270 acres of glade skiing for the upcoming season. The resort hopes to add a total of 655 acres of skiing terrain in the next three years.

Sugarloaf announced last week that the expansion will double the amount of its skiable terrain and make it the biggest ski area east of the Rocky Mountains in terms of skiable acreage.

The project involves cutting down trees and creating new areas for glade skiing – downhill skiing through open spaces in wooded areas. The project does not involve adding new trails, lifts or snowmaking capacity.
