Baldacci takes position at Defense Department

WASHINGTON — Former Gov. John Baldacci has landed a job with the U.S. Department of Defense.

In his new position with the Pentagon, former Gov. John Baldacci will work on developing ways to improve military health care, according to officials familiar with the job.

Baldacci, reached Tuesday in his Defense Department office, referred questions about his new position to Pentagon public affairs officials. A spokeswoman there said she could not provide more details until today.

The Maine Democrat, who left office this year after two terms as governor, is in a newly created position that reports to Dr. Clifford L. Stanley, undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness.

Baldacci will work on developing methods to improve military health care, according to officials familiar with the job.

Baldacci also is a former member of Congress who served four terms in the U.S. House before being elected governor in 2002.

Asked about Baldacci's new position, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the former governor is a "great choice" to work on innovative ways to improve military health care programs.

Collins cited Baldacci's experience with health care efforts.
