BRIDGTON - Route 302 in Bridgton had to be shut down for nearly three hours Monday night while local police investigated a fatal motorcycle accident.

Killed in the accident was an out-of-state man who police said was standing on the seat of his bike and waving one arm when he fell off. The man was holding the bike's handlebar with his other hand.

Police are not releasing the victim's name pending notification of his relatives. He was about 40 years old.

A second biker, 45-year-old Marjorie Loonie of Massachusetts, had to be taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. A nursing supervisor said Loonie was still being evaluated late Monday.

T.J. Reese, the Bridgton police officer who investigated the crash, said the victim was one of four motorcyclists who left together from the Trailside Steak and Seafood Restaurant around 5:25 p.m.

The party of four had driven about a quarter mile from the restaurant when the victim lost control and fell to the ground. Loonie tried to avoid hitting him, but in the process lost control of her motorcycle, police said. None of the bikers was wearing a helmet.

The circumstances leading up to the accident remain under investigation.

Reese said Route 302 reopened to traffic around 8:15 p.m.
