Bill Nemitz: Communique to a candidate: Mr. LePage, people are listening

Dear Paul LePage,

First, I must say this feels a little weird. With you running as the Republican candidate for governor and all, I figured I'd have ample opportunity between now and November to speak with you by telephone or in person and scope out who you are and where you stand on the important issues facing Maine voters this election.

But now that your recent whistle-stop tour of the midcoast region has turned into a full-blown train wreck, you've announced that henceforth you'd prefer your questions from the press in writing.

So, here goes:

Question 1: When are you going to stop making stuff up?

During your train ride, you told reporters in no uncertain terms that Arden Manning, manager of the Maine Democrats' Victory 2010 campaign, has been blogging about how you're unfit to be governor because you're a Roman Catholic and because you're of French-Canadian heritage.

"The guy, his name is Arden Manning. (He) is the guy that is spilling this garbage," you told Susan Sharon of the Maine Public Broadcasting Network when she asked you to be specific about who's targeting your religion and ancestry.

Problem is, there's no evidence whatsoever that Manning ever did such a thing.

And when asked at least four times Thursday morning by WGAN's Ken Altshuler whether you can back up your claim, the best you could come up with was that Manning has called you a "creationist," which is (to you, at least) a direct reference to your French Catholic background, which obviously implies that you're not Blaine House material because you're French Catholic.

(Excuse me for a second. I need to wait until my head stops spinning.)

The simple truth is that the entire Manning/French/Catholic thing is pure fabrication. Maybe you felt backed into a corner, maybe you were confused, but it's pretty clear to everyone at this point that you made it up.

And now there's only one way to make it go away: Admit that Manning has never uttered a word about religion or your heritage, apologize to him for saying he did and get on with your campaign.

So why is that so hard for you?

Question 2: When are you going to stop giving diametrically opposed answers to the same question?

Again, the creationism thing.

Back in May, at an MPBN forum for GOP primary candidates, you were asked, "Do you believe in creationism and do you think it should be taught in Maine public schools?"

You replied, "I would say the more education you have, the more knowledge you have, the better person you are. And I believe yes ... and yes."

Now stop me if I'm making too big a leap here, but I take that to be a "yes" (actually, a "double-yes").

Fast forward to last weekend. Reminded by those pesky reporters that you said you supported teaching creationism in public schools, you replied, "I never said such a thing. That's what he (Arden Manning) said."

Finally, during your Thursday appearance on WGAN, you said, "Creationism should be taught in schools under philosophy. Evolution should be taught in schools under science."

So, as they say on the TV game show, is that your final answer? And might we infer that you now support adding "philosophy" to the already crowded Maine school curriculum?

Question 3: Moving on to the "real issues," can you be a bit more specific?

I spent a few minutes looking through the "issues" section of your campaign website and was struck by two things.

First, under "budget concerns," you promise, "My first priority as governor will be to ensure that state government spends every tax dollar wisely. I will not tolerate wasteful spending. The tax-and-spend practices in Augusta will come to an end, and I will fight to keep every dollar where it rightfully belongs -- in your pocket."

I'm confused. If every dollar rightfully belongs in my pocket, then how is state government going to have any money to spend wisely?

Put another way, is this your best attempt to articulate your vision for a complex state fiscal crisis that grows more dire with each biennium? Or is it one of those bromides that gets lots of applause from your Tea Party friends but, if read carefully, makes no sense whatsoever?

Moving on to your plan for welfare reform, you state that "recipients (of general assistance) with disabilities would be required to perform community services within the scope of their respective ability."

Since you begin your welfare reform plan with phrases like "milking the system" and "destructive and corrupt," I can't help but think people with disabilities have good reason to worry here.

So, just to be clear, might you add a representative list of disabilities along with the kind of work you'd expect these people to perform?

(A humble suggestion: Before you propose that a person in a wheelchair, say, could help put away books at the public library, you might spend a few hours trying to do it yourself.)

Question 4: Are you having fun yet?

Now I know we haven't met, Mr. LePage, but you seem like a nice guy. And I've filled my house with enough bargains from Marden's discount stores to know that you, as the chain's general manager, know how to wheel and deal, hobnob, backslap and do all those other things so critical to a successful retail salvage business.

But I was struck by your lament on the radio Thursday that "I made a wisecrack (about the age of Libby Mitchell, your Democratic opponent, for which you've publicly apologized) and everyone ran with the wisecrack."

That's the difference between what you've done the past 14 years and what you want to do the next four.

At Marden's, you can spout off whenever you feel the urge and your words quickly evaporate into thin air. Kind of like Glenn Beck.

But as a major party candidate on the gubernatorial campaign trail, it's different. People actually listen to what you have to say. And some of us actually write it down or, better yet, record it and play it over and over and over

The way I see it, that leaves you two choices.

You can think before you speak, which I admit is a lot less fun than making stuff up or demagoguing the disabled or revving up your supporters with wisecracks that later lead to public apologies.

Or you can accept that you're just not wired that way and delegate the public speaking to someone better suited for that kind of thing. Someone who knows how to stay on message without having it boomerang into a full-blown controversy. Someone whose credibility with the public is both well-established and unimpeachable.

I'm thinking the Marden's Lady.

Wow! I liked this paper a lot more when Mr Nemitz was off in a foreign land. Isn't it amazing how Mr Nemitz is quick to criticize Mr Lepage for "making things up" when Mr Nemitz has been actually making things up for years. I have read many columns written by this hack, but this is one of the worst transparent hatchet jobs in a long time. He readily admits he has never met or talked to Mr Lepage but that doesn’t stop him from spouting this drivel. It is articles like these that keep real hardworking Maine people from running for office. People that are good at what they do, could make a real difference in how this state operates but are not interested in putting themselves or their family through this type of aggravation by a blowhard with a bullhorn.

If he said something off the cuff and apologized for it, move on. If you don’t like his answer on a particular question, ask for clarification. If you still don’t like the answer please try to separate your personal feelings from the facts. To simply criticize someone because it makes you feel superior does not move the conversation forward. A fine example of why the readership of this paper continues to dwindle. Nice job pulling Glenn Beck into the article too. Does research show that by mentioning Glenn Beck you sell more papers? It sure isn’t your ability that pays the bills. PPH, I think another long term foreign assignment is in order here, maybe even a retirement party.

What begat the Big Bang? An Aetheist in NYC believes in Catholic Education; he willed half his fortune to the NYC Catholic schools, not because he had changed his belief but because the school system WORKS! Teaching creationism in schools is NOT an issure; it seems to work in the schools that adhere to it. The public schools mostly fail in this country to provide exceptional education. Liberal spending in ME has failed: this is the only issue: how to improve the ME economy. There will be a BIG BANG in Nov when we vote for personal initiative being more efficient and vibrant than BIG Government wasting money. Big Government by its very nature is wasteful. Introducing a 3rd party in spending and allocating decisions adds administrative costs and robs ME people of the benefits of an efficient economy.

He says he wants to put tax money back into taxpayers pockets but does not say how he will do that. Under the heading of Economic opportunity he lists a number things he thinks should be done and all of them are expensive to do so how is he going to make anything happen? It seems to me that everyone wants to cut taxes, but just try and you'll get a huge outcry from those people who will be effected. Why not just come out and say exactly which programs will be cut, in addition to the draconian cuts that will have to be made to make up for the existing budget shortfall. Perhaps he will do away with the department of education and let all the unemployed parents home school their kids.

LePig is nowhere near qualified to be governor of Maine. He's a guy who jumped off the dock only to realize that he can't swim. The fact that the Republican party had such qualified candidates and nominated this knuckle-dragging buffoon is evidence that the inmates are running the asylum. On the national level, Mitch McConnell just said of the Republican efforts to extend the Bush tax "cuts" that largely created the current economic mess for America (along with two wars, both kept "off the books" by the Bush administration), that "tax cuts take care of themselves." That is just such absurdity that one has to wonder how truly irresponsible the gray matter between the ears of someone who would nod agreement to this lie might be in any context. Republicans are truly the party of irrationality. LePig is just another example of that. Republican: certifiable by nature

I'm sure that appeals to the wingnuts who nominated LePig, but in the real world you want to put professionals in charge. This is really shaping up to be a majestic train wreck, which is ironic, given that his "whistle stop" tour is what put it all in motion. Something was going to take this guy out, he's too unintelligent and unaccomplished to even muddle his way to November. Wonder if there will even be a single Gubernatorial debate? This is wonderful. Great article Bill. I think you may be on the Mayor's payroll. This will give a BIG boost to the campaign. The Dems are still, even after all these years, Clintonesque. What comes out of their mouths is very practiced very staged and if they say it long enough it's the truth. Mrs Mitchell is a wonderful lady, a very good person. But she has been a part of the 30 year demise of our private sector in Maine, and a proponent of larger and larger government. Now there is no more money, we can't afford anymore taxes the money is gone. No one in there right mind is going to hire new employees, we who own businesses are conserving cash and building equity. So, you can't argue the ISSUES (no money) so you go on personal attacks. Incidentally, Glenn Beck was the first person I have ever known to introduce to the public our AFRICAN AMERICAN founding fathers, that somehow were written out of history. Just that comment was revealing.

Blame the press! Blame reporters. When all else fails say something simple like "all dems are nuts!" How about asking all candidates to be specific about their plans for "reforming" Maine government? Let's not put up with glib generalizations from either the candidates or their supporters. Ask for specifics and examples. For example, when one says welfare recipients are playing or faking the system, ask for names and very specific info. (Bet you won't get much.) WHen they say they will cut taxes, let's ask what taxes? What will have to go in order to cut? For you sillies out there who only rant and rail and name call, please remember that you are representing a candidate. typically Maine people are middle of the roaders and do NOT appreciate a lot of foolishness. You could easily be turning off potential supporters.

What I do care is he seems to think we have sieves for memories and will buy any bull excrement he throws out in a lame attempt to CYOA. To assume the citizens of Maine would deny him office because he is French-Catholic is to assume we were not aware that Mr Baldacci, whome we elected TWICE, is an Italian-Catholic. IF I was Franco-American I'd be upset with him pretending that a very large part of the Maine population could so easily be manipulated. If I was Catholic, I'd be upset that him supposedly dosn't know what creationism is and yet wants it taught in schools. When he first ran for candidacy I was thrilled. Now? I wouldn't throw my vote away on a such a incompetent, back peddling, bald faced liar who thinks we, the citizens, can be so easily manipulated with a simple "aw shucks, I'm just a good ol' boy" attitude.

This is like a tempest in a tea cup. The Mayor lowered taxes in Waterville every year with the exception of one in Waterville. When asked about health ins, he answers, let s open the borders so anyone can shop anywhere in the country to get the best price and the best product. The mayor created a an awesome system of getting people, who were having trouble back to work. He wants to get rid of regulations like, doing a Buffalo Count to refinance a struggling business. I hope sincerely that he reduces the unbelievable excessive salaries at the state level. I was not there and neither were any of you at the MPBN interview I found that reporters and the press in general will omit statements that will make someone they don't like look GOOD. Or, they will dismiss gaffs of people they like. So, they can't argue the issues, so they will never just get on with the campaign. They are not going to let this go. So real issues will get ignored.

When Mr. LePage becomes governor this coming January we all know he will never be succesful at passing legislation to require the teaching of creationism in schools. Who cares if he thinks it would be a good idea. The important issues are the ones that are likely to actually happen and will directly benefit our lives, such as reducing the size of government, lowering taxes, ad placing limitations on our costly entitlement programs. Keep talking about the non-issues there progressives, it only emboldens the voting public against your strategy and helps to further ensure Mr. LePage's victory in November. I have been amusing myself by imagining what Bill Nemitz column would have been if there were one fact changed in Paul Le Page's dossier. Let's just pretend he is a Democrat. Think of the tears Bill would be wrenching from his readers, about Paul Le Page's life on the streets from 11 to 13, his literally pulling himself up by his bootstraps just to get through high school and college, his incredible achievement as CEO of Marden's and the growth of that company which is so Maine; his success as governor of Waterville. I am also very intrigued at the back ward growth of the Catholic church in the past 50 years. When John Kennedy was elected president and later deified by the Bill Nemitz' of this country I don't remember anyone dwelling on his opinion of creationism. In fact I suggest Bill question all his Catholic friends about exactly where they stand on this. I also remember another president who certainly was silver tongued. That is Bill Clinton. Is that what we want?

Interesting how so many on the right wing - like Common Cents - assume there is a hierarchy of races. Evolution, for example, doesn't say a robin is better than a raven or that a spider is better than a duck: It just helps us understand how they came about. Religion, on the other hand, is the thing that makes judgment calls - just consider the first four Commandments. Or consider statements by the Pope, for example, about how Judaism, Christianity and Islam actually share the "same" god. Advocating creationism to be taught in schools has been nothing but a wedge issue used by the right wing to mobilize evangelical Christians to vote for Republicans. Why should Bible stories be taught as science? Why should we accept the logic of people like Common who believe one religion is more "evolved" than the others?
