Scarborough teen injured when truck hits car on I-295

A teenager from Scarborough was injured on Interstate 295 Thursday morning when a tractor-trailer hit her car and sent it into the median, where it rolled over, state police said.

Kathleen Pride, 18, complained of neck pain after the collision and was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland to be examined, police said. The crash occurred about 9:15 a.m. near mile marker 10 northbound.

Police said a tractor-trailer carrying wood chips and driven by Charlie Judkins, 52, of Skowhegan was moving into the passing lane when it tapped the rear of Pride’s car, sending it into the median, where it rolled over.

One lane of the interstate was closed for about 90 minutes, police said.

Pride’s car, a 2006 Ford Taurus, was destroyed, police said, while Judkins’ truck sustained minor damage.

No charges are expected, police said.

BRUNSWICK

Driver, 70, passes out, hits fence, which hits joggers

A 70-year-old Brunswick man passed out while driving on Route 1 on Thursday morning and took down a guardrail and chain-link fence, which hit two joggers, according to police.

No one was seriously injured in the crash, which occurred around 8:45 a.m. on the southbound side of Route 1, between Cook’s Corner and the entrance to Route 196, said Brunswick police Lt. Tom Garrepy.

Garrepy did not know what caused Rodman Johnson to lose consciousness and drive his 2012 Toyota RAV4 off the road. He and one of the joggers, Alane Callahan, 46, of Brunswick, were taken to Midcoast Hospital for precautionary reasons, Garrepy said.

He said Johnson complained of chest pain and Callahan said her back was struck by a fence post.

The other jogger, Melissa Krebs, 50, of Lisbon, was pushed by the fence but did not want to be taken to the hospital, Garrepy said.

He said a couple of hundred feet of the fence came down in the accident. Workers from the Maine Department of Transportation and Brunswick Parks and Recreation were working to clean up the crash site, said Garrepy.

He said the accident is still under investigation, no charges are likely.

WEST PARIS

Rumford driver, 89, killed in crash of pickup and truck

An 89-year-old Rumford man died after crashing his pickup truck into a tractor-trailer.

Maine State Police said Jean Bolduc was driving on Route 26 in West Paris about 11 a.m. Wednesday when his truck drifted into the oncoming lane and crashed into the rear wheels of an oncoming truck driven by Bradley Durgin, 56, of Lewiston.

Police said Bolduc was pinned in his vehicle for a short time before being taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said speed and alcohol don’t appear to be factors in the crash.

Three charged with robbery in home invasion Saturday

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department has arrested three people in connection with a home invasion on Saturday.

Arrested were: Corey Brume, 20, of Lewiston; Paul Farrell, 21, of Lewiston; and Devin Charest, 22, of Auburn.

Chief Raymond Lafrance said that all three were charged with robbery and are being held at Androscoggin County Jail on $50,000 cash bail.

Lafrance said additional charges are expected when the case is presented to a grand jury.

According to the sheriff’s department, two or three men entered the Julie Street home of Ronald St. Pierre, 71, through a window early Saturday morning.

St. Pierre woke up and grabbed his handgun, but the men wrestled it away from him and fled, taking the loaded .44 Magnum, clothes, drugs and other items.

The sheriff’s office said St. Pierre remains hospitalized, recovering from injuries he suffered.

PORTLAND

Art museum will display Homer’s Civil War images

The Portland Museum of Art will feature the war-related imagery of American artist Winslow Homer in a new exhibit marking the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.

The exhibit, which will run from Sept. 7 through Dec. 8, includes 30 Winslow wood engravings and other prints drawn from the museum’s permanent collection. It’s part of a special series of displays around the state that’s being organized by the Maine Civil War Trail Project.

Homer made several trips to the Union front in Virginia in 1861 and 1862. The illustrations of daily life in a Civil War camp appeared in Harper’s Weekly and other popular national magazines of the 1860s.

Homer’s well-known Civil War painting “The Sharpshooter on Picket Duty” (1862) will be a part of the exhibit beginning Sept. 20, after it has returned from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

In conjunction with the exhibit, Peter H. Wood, a professor emeritus in history at Duke University and author of “Near Andersonville: Winslow Homer’s Civil War,” will speak at 6 p.m. Sept. 26 in the Bernard Osher Foundation Auditorium at the Portland Museum of Art. Admission is $15, or $10 for museum members.

 

Cooking Channel’s ‘Eat St.’ filming in Portland, Cape

Even before the Cooking Channel airs its trip to Searsport and Trenton for a classic lobster bake Sept. 3, it’s coming back to Maine for seconds.

“Eat St.,” hosted by comedian James Cunningham (and not to be confused with “Chuck’s Eat the Street” on the same network), will be filming Sunday at the Mainely Burgers food truck, which will be at 108 St. John St. in Portland. The filming is expected to take place between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

On Monday, the show will move to Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, where Cunningham will visit with the Bite Into Maine lobster truck from noon until 3 p.m.

The Cooking Channel show “Man Fire Food” will air another visit to Maine at 8 p.m. Sept. 3.

Roger Mooki, host of the show, spent a day in Searsport in June, learning how to prepare a proper lobster bake at Searsport Shores Campground’s outdoor kitchen. A crew of 13 filmed for 10 hours to complete the episode.

Mooki also stopped by the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound, which boils its lobsters in seawater over a wood fire.

“Man Fire Food” already has two recipes from the trip to Maine posted on the show’s website.

The Honey Date Pudding Cake dessert, which features black walnuts from Winterport and locally ground buckwheat flour, is the creation of Searsport Shores. The Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound contributed a Lobster Salad Sandwich recipe.

MIDDLEBURY, Vt.

Caseworker faces sex charge after visit with girl in Maine

A Vermont caseworker has been charged with a sex crime involving a child after a follow-up visit with her in Maine.

Police in Bangor said Jeffrey Parfitt, 26, of Middlebury is accused of doing an unnecessary and inappropriate exam on the girl after asking her father to leave. He’s been indicted by a grand jury on a felony charge of unlawful sexual contact.

The Vermont Department of Child and Families has placed Parfitt on administrative leave.
