A flash mob hit Monument Square in Portland on Wednesday to draw attention to all the cats available for adoption at the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.

Miss Kitty led the crowd in a dance while her human friend, Lynne McGhee, sang “It’s Raining Cats” to the tune of the 1980s hit “It’s Raining Men.” About two dozen people took part in the lunchtime event, making use of the cat masks on popsicle sticks provided by the pair. Some farmers market shoppers joined the fun.

“You are all meow-tastic!” Miss Kitty posted on Facebook after the flash mob dispersed.

There are about 360 kittens and cats now available for adoption at the Westbrook-based shelter, said McGhee, the league’s community relations manager. There are more cats available because more people are surrendering animals for economic reasons.

Today through Sunday, the shelter is waiving adoption fees for cats and kittens. The fees normally range from $50 for an older senior cat to $125 for a kitten.
