Fairfield infant dies in babysitter's care

FAIRFIELD — A 3-month-old infant died after a babysitter called police early Sunday morning to report that the baby was not breathing, police said.

Sgt. Jason Richards of the Maine State Police said that Amanda Huard was baby-sitting Brooklyn Fosse-Greenaway at Huard's Center Street home on Saturday night.

It had been arranged with the parents, who live in Clinton, that the baby would spend the night at with Huard.

At 1:34 a.m., police received a medical emergency call in which Huard said that the baby had been found unresponsive and wasn't breathing.

Emergency officials arrived six minutes later, but the infant was pronounced dead at MaineGeneral Medical Center's Thayer campus.

Richards said that the death of any child aged three years or less automatically triggers an investigation by the Maine State Police.

The results of an autopsy from the Chief Medical Examiner's Office are pending, which will determine the direction of the investigation, Richards said.
