SCARBOROUGH — Scarborough police say a 72-year-old South Portland man was killed in a crash on Route 77 on Tuesday morning.

Police said the car crashed into a tree and burst into flames shortly after 7 a.m. A passing motorist extinguished the fire.

Police have not yet identified the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they don’t believe speed was a factor in the crash and they found “no suspicious circumstances.”

Route 77, also called Spurwink Road, was closed between Ocean Avenue and Piper Road for a time while investigators worked to reconstruct the crash. The road has since reopened.
