VASSALBORO — Two Vassalboro men died in a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon on Riverside Drive.

Kenneth Lee, 63, of Bog Road, was driving north in a maroon 2007 Chevy Silverado when he crosed the center line, colliding head-on with a white 1998 Dodge Ram driven by Shawn Greenleaf, 32, according to a news release from Kennebec County Sheriff Randall Liberty.

Greenleaf suffered massive abdominal trauma, according to the release, and was pronounced dead at the scene after attempts to resuscitate him failed.

Lee also suffered extensive abdominal trauma, and a significant leg wound. Lee was pinned in the vehicle, requiring the Vassalboro Fire Department to free him using extraction equipment.

He was treated at the scene, then taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:26 p.m.

The accident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. The road, also called U.S. Route 201, was closed until 6 p.m., when one lane reopened. The accident occured about three miles north of the Augusta city line.

“There’s so much debris up here,” said Ryan Reardon, deputy chief for the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators took tire track measurements and gathered other information at the scene.

The Augusta Fire Department also responded to the crash.

The accident is being investigated and reconstructed by Sgt. Michael Pion and Deputy Jeremy Day of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office. The initial investigation did not reveal speed or alcohol as factors, according to the news release. It does indicate that Lee drifted into Greenleaf’s lane.
