AUGUSTA — In a game of one-upmanship in the whoopie pie debate, a Maine radio station is teaming up with a whoopie pie maker to create a 500-pound-plus version of the chocolate cakes stuffed with creamy frosting with the sole aim of outdoing Pennsylvania’s 250-pound confection.

Today’s announcement came as the Maine House approved a compromise that would declare the whoopie pie the state “treat,” while giving a nod to the state’s blueberry industry by making the blueberry pie the state’s official “dessert.”

The measure was approved 107-34 but required a second reading before going to the Senate for consideration.

“Off the record, I would say a heavy load has been lifted off our plate,” House Speaker Robert Nutting said to some laughs after the vote was taken.

Contrary to Maine’s assertion, Pennsylvania contends the whoopie pie was invented by the Amish.

But WMGX Program Director Randi Kirshbaum says there’ll be no doubt over whose whoopie is bigger.

The South Portland-based radio station is teaming up with Wicked Whoopies to make a whoopie that’ll be at least double the size of Pennsylvania’s current whoopie record holder.

The massive whoopie pie will be assembled and displayed Saturday at the Maine Mall in South Portland, Kirshbaum said.

Afterward, it’ll be cut up by Reps. Paul Davis and Emily Cain, sponsors of the whoopie pie bill, and will be given away in exchange for donations. Proceeds going to send smaller whoopies to Maine troops serving overseas.
