Man charged with threatening to shoot LePage

PORTLAND — A 50-year-old Portland man is behind bars after being arrested on federal charges he threatened to kill Gov. Paul LePage in anonymous letters mailed to the governor.

According to court papers, Michael R. Thomas allegedly wrote the governor: "As far as I'm concerned you're the devil himself and I will put a bullet or two in you, if it's the last thing I do. I'm willing to sacrifice my life just to make sure you die ... I will strike when you least expect it."

Thomas is scheduled for a bail hearing in U.S. District Court Wednesday on charges of mailing threatening communications, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Federal agents arrested Michael R. Thomas on Friday after connecting him to the letters by DNA analysis, according to court papers. The papers do not indicate whether a gun has been recovered.
