WILTON – A Weld Road man was found dead in his apartment late Tuesday after a five-hour standoff that began when police were called to the home and heard a single gunshot.

The body of Raymond Richard, 60, was found shortly after 11 p.m., Wilton police Chief Heidi Wilcox said in a news release.

There was a report of domestic violence at the apartment at 164 Weld Road at 6 p.m., but the call came from another location, she said.

Wilcox said Richard was at the front door when police arrived but would not open it and went upstairs.

Soon after he went upstairs, police heard a single gunshot from the apartment, she said.

The Maine State Police Tactical Team was called to assist and Wilcox said about six people were moved from their homes in the area for their safety.

The tactical team entered the apartment after 11 p.m. and found Richard dead.

Richard, who lived with his wife in the apartment, was home alone at the time of the incident, Wilcox said.

An autopsy has been scheduled by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The incident is still under investigation, Wilcox said.
