Maine fire marshal: So far, so good on fireworks

PORTLAND — Maine officials say there were at least three injuries involving consumer fireworks on the Fourth of July. And Fire Marshal Joe Thomas is urging people to stay safe as fireworks continue to be set off through the weekend.

One of the most serious incidents involved a Standish man injured after modifying fireworks, which went off on his face because of a short fuse.

In Hiram, a man was injured when a mortar-style rocket he thought was a dud went off in his hand. And in Charleston, a woman's pants leg caught fire when a rocket went sideways instead of up in the air.

This Fourth of July was the first in 63 years in which fireworks were legal in Maine.

Thomas said he's pleased with the relatively low number of fireworks-related injuries.
