Maine plans measured approach to gun control

On the agenda will be issues like gun safety education, background checks and limits on access for the mentally ill, says a Criminal Justice panel co-chair.

Rep. Mark Dion, D-Portland, who co-chairs the Criminal Justice Committee, said there will be a push for a comprehensive approach to gun laws that includes improving gun safety education; upgrading school security; banning high-capacity magazines; requiring background checks for gun shows and private sales; and restricting access to firearms for the mentally ill.

Sen. Gary Plummer, R-Windham, the ranking Republican on the Criminal Justice Committee, said he thinks lawmakers will be more open to considering many of the proposals they have rejected in the past.

Firearm deaths in Maine 1999-2010
The vast majority of firearm deaths in Mane are self-inflicted. There is no clear pattern for firearm fatalities due to assaults and accidents.
