PORTLAND — Portland police have six people in custody following a standoff at the Riverton Apartments.

Shortly after 2 p.m. the last person walked out of the apartment at 2 Pinewood Road and gave himself up. He was ordered to his knees by members of a special police reaction team.

Portland Police Chief James Craig said charges include aggravated assault and robbery stemming from an attack on a woman early this morning.

The woman called police at 7 a.m. to report that she had been attacked, her hand slashed, and her cellphone stolen.

As police investigated the attack, they learned from witnesses that there may have been shots fired at the public housing complex during the night.

Police evacuated nearby apartments and ordered occupants of the apartment to come out, but they refused.

At about 2 p.m. two men and a woman surrendered and were transported to a command post just inside the entrance to the Riverton complex.

When the three were led out and into a cruiser, many in a crowd of about 50 spectators cheered.

“This is a win,” said Craig. “To me, a win is when the community is safe, the officers are safe, and when the people involved are safe.”

The standoff lasted for more than six hours.

Craig said police still need to search inside the apartment for any other suspects and any evidence of criminal activity.
