Woman faces sentencing for misuse of veterans benefits

Marsha Jacobs is accused of diverting benefits intended for her brother-in-law.

PORTLAND — A Topsham woman accused of misusing tens of thousands of dollars in veterans benefits is due to be sentenced in federal court Thursday.

Marsha Jacobs faces a maximum prison term of five years for misappropriation of fiduciaries.

Jacobs was appointed as her brother-in-law's fiduciary and received approximately $242,000 in benefits intended for him over a period of about 3½ years, according to a court document. She estimated that she used about $80,000 for other purposes, including for an addition to her house, according to the document.
