Maine man sentenced to 2 years in fatal crash

ALFRED – A Sanford man convicted of manslaughter last month for a high-speed crash in 2010 that killed one man and injured five was sentenced Thursday in York County Superior Court to serve two years behind bars.

Zachary Bubar, 24, was found guilty after a two-day trial before a judge, rather than a jury, of manslaughter, four counts of aggravated assault and four counts of driving to endanger.

On July 15, 2010, Bubar was trying to pass a vehicle when he hit a van in the oncoming lane of traffic, according to Sanford Deputy Police Chief Timothy Strout.

A passenger in Bubar's vehicle, Shawn Beaulieu, 25, of Sanford, was killed. Four other people, including Bubar, were injured.

According to the York County District Attorney's Office, Bubar was sentenced by Justice Paul Fritzsche to nine years in prison for the most serious charge, manslaughter, with two years to serve and the rest suspended, and four years of probation.

For aggravated assault, Fritzsche sentenced Bubar to a five-year prison term, with 18 months to serve and the rest suspended.

Bubar will serve that sentence at the same time he serves the sentence for manslaughter.

For driving to endanger, Bubar was given a three-year prison term with one year to serve and the balance suspended.

He was ordered to lose his driver's license for four years, one year for each count.
