CONCORD, N.H. — New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen has asked the Secret Service and Internal Revenue Service to investigate reports of tax fraud affecting more than 150 doctors and health care providers in the state and in Vermont.

In Maine, about 30 doctors have made similar reports to the Maine Medical Association, according to Krebs Security, an online IT security news service.

The medical societies in all three states say Social Security numbers have been stolen and used to file fraudulent federal tax returns. At least several hospitals and some private providers have been targeted.

According to Krebs, the American Medical Association has heard complaints from medical associations across the country within the past two weeks.

Shaheen is asking for a joint investigation by the Secret Service and IRS.
