With deadline looming, Occupy Maine protesters packing up

PORTLAND — Several communal buildings were being dismantled Saturday at the Occupy Maine site in Lincoln Park.

But there was a long way to go if protesters planned to meet the city's 8 a.m. Monday deadline to remove all structures and belongings from the park. Most of the tents and living quarters erected during a four-month occupation remained standing while the kitchen was still in use.

Protesters were expected to hold their regular 3 p.m. Sunday meeting today at the park.

The city served an eviction notice Thursday, warning protesters that anyone found camping in the park between 10 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. after Monday could be arrested.

The notice was delivered a day after Superior Court Judge Thomas Warren upheld the city's denial of Occupy Maine's request to continue to protest at the park. The encampment was erected in October and continues to be occupied by a handful of protesters, some of whom are homeless.
