Maine State Police troopers converge at the scene of a crash just off Exit 63 on Interstate 95 late Monday night following a shooting and police chase. After the car visible at the top was stopped by spike mats, the driver, Nathaniel Gordon, killed himself, police say. He earlier had killed his wife, Sarah Gordon, in Winslow, according to police.

Nathaniel Gordon, 32, shot his wife, Sarah Gordon, 30, near their home on Marie Street, State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said in a statement late Monday.

Nathaniel Gordon fled the scene, but his vehicle was spotted by state troopers, who followed him along the Maine Turnpike through Lewiston.

The chase ended about 9:10 p.m. near the Gray interchange.

“He went over a spike mat and that deflated one tire,” McCausland said.

He said troopers told him that the driver then shot and killed himself.

Autopsies are scheduled for today at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta.

McCausland said the Gordons were parents of a son and daughter, ages 8 and 9, who’ve been placed in the custody of a grandparent.

He said this was the seventh homicide of the year in Maine and the third related to domestic violence.
