OAKLAND – The 18-month-old girl who authorities say ingested cocaine Thursday was released Friday from MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville, police said.

“That’s great news,” said Oakland police Capt. Rick Stubbert. “I would say she is out of danger if they discharged her.”

But according to one doctor in central Maine, the dangerous drug could have long-term effects on someone so young.

Dr. Michael Lambke, a family physician in Skowhegan, said even a small amount of cocaine taken by a child that age could constitute an overdose. He said the drug’s effect on the child’s developing brain should be of primary concern.

The girl’s father, Justin Currier, 30, of 25 Belgrade Road, was to be formally charged Friday at the Kennebec County jail in Augusta.

Currier and the child’s mother, Jillian Jones, 21, of the same address, are charged with felony endangering the welfare of a child, possession of cocaine and destruction of physical evidence, because the cocaine allegedly was destroyed before police arrived, Stubbert said.

Jones was arrested Thursday and released on $10,000 unsecured bail. Currier also was arrested and is being held without bail on a probation violation. A court date for the couple has been set for Aug. 9.

Stubbert said Thursday that the child was playing unsupervised, apparently “got into” cocaine that her parents had in the apartment and ingested some of it. Both parents were in the room with the toddler at the time, he said. Stubbert said it is not known how much cocaine the child swallowed.
