If Central Maine Power’s smart meters don’t pose a health threat (“PUC should not block ‘smart meters’ program,” Oct. 15) why have doctors and other health officials throughout the country called for immediate bans and moratoriums on installation of any more of these radiation-emitting devices?

I have spoken to these doctors around the country, who have first-hand knowledge of people developing headaches, muscle spasms, heart palpitations, insomnia, dizziness, etc. after their smart meter is installed.

The truth is, non-ionizing radiation (the type emitted by smart meters) is under global investigation as a possible carcinogen.

Even the President’s Cancer Panel last year called this type of radiation a possible cause of cancer, urging more research and, in the meantime, urging people to limit their wireless exposure.

In other states, doctors have at least lobbied for opt-out waivers for people who don’t want to take the risk. CMP refuses to allow us that choice.

CMP, with the help of Maine’s public health director, is forcing us to expose our families to the transmissions from every wireless meter in the neighborhood, as well as from the new antennas being installed as part of these networks.

It shouldn’t be up to Maine families to prove harm. The state should produce independent peer-reviewed scientific studies (not funded by CMP) showing these meters and the neighborhood antennas are safe. No such studies exist.

Until they do, CMP should not install one more meter.

Once we receive indisputable scientific proof that smart meters pose no short- or long-term health risks — especially for our children, whose bodies are more susceptible to radiation — installation can resume.

Until then, CMP, let’s err on the side of caution. Your message to Maine families right now is: Better sorry than safe.
