Dan Demeritt: Responsible representing calls for responsible criticism

The five Republican senators seeking re-election don't deserve Democrats' unfair attacks.

Rector keeps at it because he is very optimistic about the future of Maine, especially when it comes to bringing more knowledge-based businesses to our state. With a way of life that is the envy of all, he reasons, we must continue the progress of the last two years to encourage new economic enterprises and professionals to choose Maine.

The attacks launched by Democrats against these five Senate Republicans are not thoughtful, fair or alone. Republicans are every bit the equal of Democrats when it comes to dumbing down the political process.

In response to weeks of attacks against incumbent Republican Sen. Tom Martin by Democrats, the Republican party launched a website last week detailing the online gaming habits and obscure blog posts of Democrat Senate challenger Colleen Lachowicz of Waterville. The site is invasive and a perfect example of why a lot of reasonable people avoid running for political office.

When asked about the GOP website and tactics attacking his opponent, Senator Martin put it simply and best: "I could do without it."

Couldn't we all?
